In Indian civilization
women are considered as the receptacle of the society, from the mythological
time to the modern Indian society women are seen as the backbone of the family.
They are one way is the mother of a kid, a daughter of a mother, wife of a
husband, boss of an office. They play all these characters every day and never
get tired of it. Women believe in self esteem and have the courage of coming
out to the outside world to help others in day to day life. We found same
quality within
Goddess Durga also. She is mother; she is the destroyer and also
a wife of a sage.
In mythology women were
used as a person, who can bear a child of a king or of a sage to expand their
family tree. At the time of coronation a king requires a wife to complete the
ceremony. Other than these roles they were merely a woman of a house. Kings
used to have many wives and among them barely one or two used to enjoy the
intimacy of the king.
When women became an
important person they changed their roles to fit for situation. We want to
share some anecdotes with you from The Mahabharata regarding these changing
roles of women and how they have become an extraordinary woman from a submissive
woman. This story is about Chitrangada, a queen from Manipur. Once India’s
greatest archer Arjuna fell in love with Chitrangada and went to Manipur to
meet her. But hearing this Chitrangada changed her muscular look and became an
elegant, beautiful woman as she was feeling shy to come out in front of Arjuna because
of her manly body. When Arjuna saw Chitrangada for the first time he was
shocked and felt bad because Arjuna was in love with Chitrangada because of her
muscular body. This is an incident when a woman wants her love in their own
terms.
Women can take the role
of a destroyer also. When mighty Bhisma refused to marry Amba, she committed
suicide and took another birth as Shrikhandi, a man with feministic behaviours and
became the main reason for Bhisma’s death.
These changing roles
were made by their own terms. They showed the actual path how to deal with the
society. You may be soft from inside but to fight against the odds you actually
require being hard and aggressive from outside. In this Durga puja we will
celebrate the womanhood of our ethnic society. Mahalaya is the starting day of this
event. From this day Goddess Durga will stay in her father’s home till Vijayadashami.
We also pay homage to our forefathers by taking a bath on the river Ganga. All women
have a power of Durga.
