Maha
Shivratri is a festival celebrated every year in respect of the god Shiva. It
is said that today the day when the Lord Shiva married the goddess Parvati. The
name Maha Shivratri means 'Great Night of Shiva’ marks the union of Shiva and
Shakti. Maha Shivratri is celebrated in the month of ‘Phalguna’.
The
festival is principally celebrated by offerings to Lord Shiva, all-day fasting
and an all-night-vigil. All through the day, devotees chant "Om Namah
Shivaya", the sacred mantra of Shiva. Penances are performed in order to
gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life's
highest good steadily and swiftly.
